Clayton Miller was hired as an electromechanical technician at Advanced Heat Treat Corp. (AHT) in 2008 and immediately began to make an impact through his efforts to modernize equipment. In this position, Clay also became an expert in servicing equipment. For 12 years, Clay was mentored in all areas of maintenance for general heat treat services by AHT's previous maintenance manager of 21 years. Clay had big shoes to fill.

AHT relies on Clay to continuously improve the equipment and facilities. In the short time he has been maintenance manager, Clay has helped AHT to install new induction equipment and the first automation line for that department. Clay has worked on a reduced emissions improvement project, equipment upgrades, facility improvements for better process flow, and building expansion projects. At the Burton facility, Clay has overseen the installation of two new induction machines, cryogenics equipment, blast equipment, and the marrying of two new robots with one of those induction machines (the first of its kind at AHT).

Clay is the EHS safety champion and is actively involved as the sole member representing AHT's Waterloo, IA location. As a manger, Clay brings forward safety issues, provides for continuous reduction of workplace hazards, and stays abreast of new and changing EHS regulations that affect the plant. All of this, and Clay continues to keep the 30+ operating units in tip-top shape, with the facility running 24/7/365.

Clay takes pride in the facility looking clean and organized. His exceptional troubleshooting ability makes him a great manager. As a manager, Clay does more than put out fires, track work, develop procedures, communicate with the team, and make sure day-to-day tasks are done: he is a hands-on manager, repairing and installing equipment, and controlling costs in his department. Clay is a strategic thinker and works to ensure the plant is free of downtime. He helps AHT to move into the future by encouraging the company to invest in new equipment, robotics, and environmentally friendly practices. Clay deserves recognition for efforts to learn the business over the last 14 years.
