Previously, Extral outsourced its nitriding operations to a local heat treater, due to quality issues encountered with an underperforming in-house nitriding unit. However, this latest investment enables them to bring nitriding operations back in-house, ensuring better control over the quality and consistency of their nitrided dies while also benefiting from expedited turnaround times.

Marcin Stoklosa, project manager at Nitrex, said, “Working with Extral on this project has been a pleasure. . . . Seeing customers invest in their business and achieve their goals, especially when it aligns with our values of innovation and sustainability, is always rewarding.”

As a first-time partner with Nitrex, İnsu Teknik has strategically invested in advanced heat treat technology, focusing on continuous improvement to enhance the quality of gas springs, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Central to their decision was İnsu Teknik’s commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing practices, which led them to seek a greener solution.

Commissioned in the last quarter of 2023, the system — featuring a large-capacity pit furnace — combines three key process technologies: Nitreg® controlled nitridingNitreg®-C controlled nitrocarburizing, and ONC® in-process post-oxidation. These technologies enhance the surface properties of gas spring rods, notably improving wear and corrosion resistance, and offering considerable operational advantages.

The system ensures uniform case depth and precisely managed nitride/nitrocarburizing layer formation, optimizing the mechanical properties of the gas spring rods. It minimizes part distortion — an advantage of operating at lower temperatures compared to salt bath nitrocarburizing — and eliminates the need for post-finishing operations due to the cleaner surface achieved through gas nitrocarburizing, thereby streamlining the manufacturing process.

Marcin Stoklosa, manager of Technical Sales — EMEA region at Nitrex, shared these insights, “The commissioning process was executed seamlessly, marking İnsu Teknik’s strategic shift towards greater control over their production processes. What sets this system apart is its versatility in meeting the specific requirements of various gas spring applications across various industries, including automotive, agriculture, machinery, marine, furniture, medical equipment, and more.”

Research Institute Expands R&D Capabilities with Heat Treat Furnace

A technology research institute has chosen a heat treat vacuum furnace which will support research and development in the fields of materials engineering and machine construction and operation.

SECO/WARWICK will supply a Vector® vacuum furnace with high-pressure gas hardening and will include options for vacuum carburizing, pre-nitriding for carburizing technology, low-pressure nitriding (LPN), and low-pressure carbonitriding (LPCN).

This configuration provides precision performance in vacuum, ensuring steel detail surfaces are protected, and the ability to carry out hardening processes through the use of high cooling gas pressures (15 bar).

The small vacuum furnace will have a working space of 400x400x600 mm. With a round heating chamber, the furnace, despite its small size, can be used to test and perform research on many sizes of parts including work with large dimensions.

Says Sławomir Woźniak, CEO of the SECO/WARWICK Group, "We cooperate with scientific institutions all over the world because we are aware that industry development depends on their work. Many groundbreaking discoveries have already been made, but I am sure that many more are yet to come."

The R&D institute deals with methods of refining metal products by increasing their corrosion resistance and increasing mechanical properties, especially fatigue strength and resistance to wear in friction processes. The technological institute strives to disseminate and apply in practice the results of scientific research and development work, develops new technologies, and conducts service activities.

Eco-Friendly Nitriding/Nitrocarburizing System for In-House Heat Treater

A leading component supplier to manufacturers of converting and CNC machinery, Reymak Makine As, has embarked on a journey to enhance manufacturing quality while reducing its environmental impact. This strategic move aims to internalize heat-treating operations and advance the sustainability tooling components.

Reymak Makine Aş has integrated an eco-friendly Nitrex nitriding/nitrocarburizing system into its facility in Manisa, Türkiye. The heat treater offers a diverse product range, including an array of converting tools and CNC components, ranging from friction shafts/rings to reel cones, core chucks, and safety chucks. These components play a  role in the packaging industry by ensuring alignment and tension of materials such as paper, film, foil, labels, textiles, and more. They prevent the occurrence of loose or soft rolls that could otherwise compromise product quality. Safety chucks, on the other hand, are specialized clamp devices designed for CNC and turning machinery, ensuring precision and accuracy in machining operations.

Recognizing the drawbacks of electroless nickel plating, Reymak sought to enhance the quality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of its manufacturing operations. To achieve these objectives, the company selected a nitriding/nitrocarburizing system, specifically the compact model NXK-812, equipped with advanced process technologies. These technologies include Nitreg® controlled nitriding, Nitreg®-C controlled nitrocarburizing, and ONC® post-oxidation.

Utku Inan, Nitrex’s local representative in Türkiye, emphasized, “[This collaboration] demonstrates that by embracing sustainable innovations in its in-house heat treatment, Reymak is not only enhancing quality control but also streamlining logistics for faster lead times and cost savings – a genuine win-win scenario.”

Manufacturer in Energy Expands with Heat Treat System

A manufacturer for the energy industry has recently announced the installment of a roller hearth furnace system. The heat treat system is comprised of two (2) box furnaces with quench tanks, a dual directional load transfer car, four (4) companion draw batch ovens, and two (2) stationary load/unload tables.

The system from Lindberg/MPH has a maximum operating temperature of 1850°F for the box furnaces, which are designed for nitrogen-based atmosphere applications. The load space dimensions of the box furnaces are 48” W x 96” D x 36” H, with larger internal chambers to provide clearance for baskets or fixtures. A snake chain pusher assembly with a dual-directional pacecar is used by each furnace to transfer the loads from the chamber to the pneumatically operating quench elevator deck.

The glycol quench tanks are designed for quick and uniform quenching, featuring an immersion oil heater and an externally mounted air-to-quench media heat exchanger. The tanks’ agitation systems include four agitators with draft tubes. The gross load capacity of the car is 10,000 lbs., and it travels linearly in front of the equipment on two embedded floor rails.
