Dan Herring, known throughout the industry as “The Heat Treat Doctor®”, has been involved in heat treating and metallurgy for over 45 years. He spent the first half of his career working for equipment manufacturers prior to launching The HERRING GROUP, Inc. in 1995. His vast knowledge and experience in the field includes materials science, metallurgy, engineering, equipment design, process and application expertise, as well as work in R&D and new product development.

Dan holds a patent (as a co-inventor) on low pressure carburizing, and a broad range of industries are made better because of his consulting services in the fields of heat treating, brazing and sintering. The Heat Treat Doctor strongly believes that openly sharing of non-proprietary knowledge and discoveries in the field will advance the industry. He has held the position of an associate research professor with the Thermal Processing Technology Center (Illinois Institute of Technology) and has written six books and nearly 900 technical articles. Dan frequently lectures both nationally and internationally at conferences and workshops besides doing “lunch & learn” and other electronic training.

Dan’s books, Atmosphere Heat Treatment: Principles, Applications, Equipment, Volume 1; Atmosphere Heat Treatment: Atmospheres, Quenching, Testing, Volume 2; Vacuum Heat Treatment: Principles, Practices, Applications, Volume 1; and Vacuum Heat Treatment: Applications, Equipment, Operations, Volume 2 are must haves for every heat treater’s library from the rookie to the veteran. A wealth of knowledge and application can be found in each volume.
