John Pinnell – Heat Treat Today 40 Under 40

Name: John Pinnell
Company: Nitrex Metal, Inc. | Canada
Position: Mechanical Designer
John Pinnell earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and has both a technical background and an advanced computer knowledge. John began his time at Nitrex Metal, Inc. as a drafter, creating 3D models. From there, he progressed to managing the SolidWorks CAD departments in Canada and Poland, and eventually transitioned from drafting to designing. When Nitrex transitioned through the acquisition by Novacap, John's efforts focused on preserving and archiving years' worth of design knowledge, and these efforts opened new opportunities for John in R&D. John enjoys product development because it allows him to experiment with new ideas. In his R&D work, John redesigned prototypes for flow meters and endo generators and similarly expanded Nitrex's nitriding furnace capacities. R&D also propelled John to create and launch a new product line: a dipping corrosion inhibitor process.

Outside of R&D, John worked tirelessly to optimize the Nitrex nitriding systems and other auxiliary products for cost and durability, as well as pushing for higher quality in documentation control and design standards. With the help of his advanced computer knowledge, John is an invaluable member of the ERP implementation team. His product knowledge ad project participation helped with proper technical setup of the company-wide ERP software, allowing for data mining and analytics that were previously impossible. He is currently involved in the continual implementation of the ERP at other Nitrex locations worldwide, and he has established himself as the go-to ERP expert for technical support. John is a dedicated and hardworking individual who is never afraid to take on new challenges in his career, embrace change, and expand his wide-ranging skill set.
